Parenting a discouraged child - overcoming self doubt and promoting self confidence

Parenting a discouraged child - overcoming self doubt and promoting self confidence

"One important key to success is self-confidence." "An important key to self - confidence is preparation." - Arthur Ashe

Textbooks

Lots of kids have a hard time committing themselves to expend the effort to learn what their teachers want them to learn. We adults might say to them, "Just do it!"...but the directive is unlikely to get the desired result. Instead, a frustrated student often holds the pencil, looks at the paper, stares at the textbooks and hopes for any interruption.

Textbooks

You might ask "why?" Why don't kids do what we did? some of US were good students because we believed we were supposed to be good students. If our family expected US to be good students, many of US inherited the we could be was that. For some of US, our commitment to success in school what to prove ourfamily was wrong. Even if no one in our family had ever graduated from high school or college, some of US took on the challenge and said, "I will!" But some of US became embittered about school and education because we believed we couldn't of succeed no matter what. And unfortunately, even when this notion is not spoken or broadcast within a family, sometimes inherit belief kids their parents'.

Self-confidence is a crucial component of achieving success in school. When children are confident, they can learn new ideas and facts because their minds are open and available. Their minds are not busy or distracted with memories of failure, criticisms of their abilities or messages of self-doubt. Internal chattered messages of "I can't" crowd out any possibility of "Maybe I can!" When achild believes he / she cannot learn, when she believes she isn't smart enough or when he believes the challenge is too great for him, learning is impossible...the internal chorus is too loud and distracting.

Repairing self-confidence is difficult-- but not impossible. Kids are unable to do most however, it on their own. The adults in a discouraged child's world become the only forces strong enough to overcome the child's perception of self doubt. Children are at the mercy (or blessed by) the behaviors of the adults they respect and look up to. So, they either unconsciously absorb the negative perceptions or the positive ones.

Overcoming self doubt

A discouraged child is likely to believe that a task is impossible-- for him. He can see that others can do it and yet he is unableto successfully accomplish the expected goal. It is valuable to see how it is possible to create a self-doubting child so that we can devise to the opposite tactic to create a confident child.

Little children listen to what we say. And, because we're bigger and seem to be knowledgeable, kids believe US (at least when they are little). With this huge power to shape a child's beliefs, adults may inadvertently undermine a child's confidence-- actually teaching self-doubt. When we narrow a child's endeavors (i.e. "you aren't big enough to carry the milk to the table"), we potentially contribute to a developing self-image that doubts his/her own physical ability. When we ask dissection para tagging questions (i.e. "Why can't you be smart like your sister?"), we add strength to a child's belief that theobserved comparison is valid and that she is "not smart" (translated to "not capable"). Or when we complain about our children's faults to others (i.e. "he is so lazy and he never cleans up after him eleven"), they often internalize the criticism as a statement of fact about him as a person.

Most of US parents have been very careful to avoid blatant messages of failure or discouragement. But the process of development (from infantile incompetence to adult competence), is fraught with opportunities for success and failure from the child's perspective. Kids know when they've "blown it". And sense of failure or lack of skill often we're not around to reverse the child's.

Therefore, it is our job as parents (and big parents and teachers and caring adults) to encourage our childrenwhenever we can. Now, it doesn't work to offer undeserved praise-- that will only instill a distrust of you and your opinion. For example: When a kid ex the milk, you wouldn't say, "Great job". And if he brings home a spelling test on which she scored two (2) correct answers out of ten (10), your child would be very suspicious if you said "well, correct two is better than one". Kids are smart, they can see through fabricated manipulation and they'll distrust your future evaluations.

Promoting courage and self confidence

Instead of talking about evaluations (who did what, how it turned out, and how a child's performance compared to others) a conversation about positive behaviors and abilities is more likely to reverse the downward drag of self doubt and redirect toward a newprocess of ascending self-confidence. Look for small successes and brag on them.

"Honesty" is everything, and "Tact" is a close second.

(1) When your child sets the table, point out when the forks and spoons are in the right position. Congratulate your child's correct behavior, admire his/her ability to do it right (where it truly IS correct) and ask him to check and compare the other settings so he / she can make corrections if necessary. When the table is properly set, comment about how you feel about things being in their proper place and your child's ability to make it so.

(2) When your child brings home a less-than-stellar report card, look first at what IS stellar. Congratulate your child's positive performance, admire his ability to do it right (where it truly IS)(correct) and ask him what the difference is between the subjects he does well in and what subjects are more difficult. Include your child in the discussion (to evidence your opinion that his ideas ARE valuable and you want him to keep coming up with new ideas). Then ask him how you can help. Putting your child in charge of the challenge, honoring his opinions and ideas and offering your support tell him many things:
(1) You trust that he CAN think it through.
2) You believe that his ideas are valuable and
(3) That you're willing to do what you need to in order to support his success.

Your confidence in his thoughts and abilities reinforces his of Carlyle courage to explore issues and bolsters his self-confidence.

Gottmans' home 'The Art and Science of Love' DVD or online family therapy

Gottmans' home 'The Art and Science of Love' DVD or online family therapy

Originally 'The Art and Science of Love' what a textbook written the controversial psychologist and founder of the school of psychology known as by Albert Ellis ' rational emotive behaviour therapy'. More recently some of his ideas have been incorporated into a workshop for couples by John and Julie Gottman, who are so psychologists.

Textbooks

They use proven resources and scientifically researched information into what strengthens marriages and families. Without such a basis family therapy becomes largely heresy, no more use than old wives' tales and common street gossip.

Textbooks

The quality of your marital relationship not only influences you and your partner but also affects every member of your immediate family. Research shows that a poor marital relationship ex over into theways in which parents relate to children, and therefore the ways in which children develop both physically, emotionally, and in terms of their intelligence.

The Gottmans have put together a useful DVD workshop, plus a manual with exercises to help people to improve their relationships. The program includes evidence based information presented in light-hearted ways, plus a number of concepts such as 'the love map', a means to help people identify more clearly the five areas that each partner uses to measure the concern, or lack thereof, that their partner has for them.

Since all the information in the program is evidence based, the sole question anyone considering purchasing the DVD set must have, is whether the program is right for them or not. If you and your partner are thekinds of people who are able to change your lives through books, education or knowledge the answer is probably yes.

On the other hand, if you are someone who needs to be taken by the hand and be helped to your own way to a happier, more find fulfilling lifestyle then most likely to on-line coach, or therapist will prove a better investment.

If your past experience is someone who has purchased video courses and then been unable to apply what is taught, then almost certainly online therapy with a skilled professional counselor is likely to be more helpful than any book, or DVD course.

Whether you're writing about your work, a hobby, or a special interest you have keen insights to doing things better, faster, cheaper, or better in some way. Do not assume that everyone knows what you know and therefore your information is irrelevant. Such is rarely the case.

How To Avoid The Potential Pitfalls Of Document Translation

How To Avoid The Potential Pitfalls Of Document Translation

Document translation is a crucial part of communication between different areas of the world. Simply reading about how various archaeologists debate the meaning of different passages of text demonstrates that there are pitfalls to be avoided to ensure a clear meaning in the resulting document. These pitfalls are found in two different areas - the original document and the translator.

Textbooks

The Original Document

Textbooks

As language evolves, different colloquialisms develop. Many times, these localized concepts are difficult or even impossible to translate to another language.

The best way to avoid this problem is to ensure that the original document is written in the most "textbook" language possible. While certain colloquialisms add elegance and a meaning that suits the concept perfectly, each use of a localized saying creates an opportunity to add confusion to the translation. Penning the original document with translation in mind requires an awareness of the actual language used and the possibility that it could be misunderstood by a translator.

The Translator

A translator is the bridge between the author of a given document and his or her audience in a foreign land. To ensure that the translated document retains its original meaning, it is necessary to use a translator who is intimately familiar with both.

Even paying close attention to the original writing of a document, it is virtually impossible to guarantee that it is totally free from localized terminology. An author in the UK would think nothing about referring to a car park, whereas a translator trained only in American English would find it impossible to make the connection from 'car park' to 'parking lot'. Avoiding this problem requires a translator who is intimately familiar with the culture of the person writing the document as well as the culture of the expected audience. A letter from an Australian businessman to a Chinese businessman requires someone trained in conversational Australian English and conversational Mandarin, Wu, Min, or whatever the native language of the Chinese businessman is. This familiarity with both cultures allows the translator to make the correct translations for various colloquialisms and to suggest alternatives when no direct translation exists.

Culture encompasses more than simply geography. An American engineer in the nuclear power industry will use vocabulary that an American golf instructor will be totally unaware of. Likewise, a Japanese nuclear power expert will likely have industry specific vocabulary that parallels that of the American engineer but be unknown to the average Japanese person.

To ensure that the document is translated perfectly, choosing a translator who is familiar with both the geographic culture and the industry culture of both the author and the audience is essential. Translation is as much an art as a science. Every language on Earth allows various ways of saying the same thing. Selecting the most effective and appropriate of these ways is something that requires more than simply being able read both languages. It requires an understanding of which word choices both the author and audience of a given document would use in a given situation.

Document translation is a complicated field with a myriad of possible mistakes. Choosing simple language for the original document and a translator intimately familiar with the cultures of the document's author and recipient will allow these potential mistakes to be minimized or eliminated.
