Each child is an individual though and what homeschool textbooks and supplies may be perfect for one child may not be the best fit for another. Luckily, there are lots of options! Because you know these people personally, and their kids too, you can have the added benefit of insight as to what similarities they share with you and your children; and how the home schooling supplies they have liked may be something you and your child might like (or not like) also.

With the wide use of the internet, you can now find a lot of help with your search for the best homeschooling supplies by reading reviews at the various online homeschool textbook stores. There are countless online reviews about curriculum for homeschool on various homeschool forums and message boards, as well as your state or local yahoo group. Many have a designated spot for reviews, or, take matters into your own hands and just get a discussion going about favorite home schooling supplies.

Many homeschoolers also maintain blogs now about what they are doing, and their life as homeschoolers. Some also post online reviews of the home schooling materials they have experience with. This is a fantastic way to benefit from another homeschooler's experience and opinion of home schooling supplies.

Create a Relationship With a Homeschool Book Store You Can Trust

If you are lucky enough, you may, through word of mouth or your own experience, find a homeschool book store that you can trust to only offer the best curriculum for homeschool. This way, you'll know that if they carry it, it's got to be good.

One marker of a good homeschool book store is that it is run by fellow (and usually very experienced) homeschoolers. Most shops that cater to homeschoolers do so because they enjoy and want to help other homeschoolers. They too know that the search for the best homeschool textbooks and curriculm is a very important, and potentially time consuming process. You can benefit from their support and knowledge, and in return, patronize their shops!

Of course no matter how much you research curriculum for homeschool you'll still need to use it to be able to accurately judge the fit between the homeschool textbook and your child. But, if you try to utilize these ideas (and make sure the store has a good return policy!), then you'll make your search for high quality homeschool textbooks and curriculum much more easy and successful!

Teaching Textbooks - Homeschool Math Programs - Is it Worth the Money?

I have never been a fan of Saxon Math. I used it during my first few years homeschooling because it was the most well-known and most recommended program. If I had it to do over, I never would have used Saxon at all. My kids and I found it tedious to slog through - it had such a public school feel to it. Lots of added on extras, just so the state standards got covered. At least that is how I perceive the program.

Textbooks

In the early grades (K-6) I prefer to use something like ABeka or Horizons and then switch to the "Key To" series" for reinforcement in fractions and decimals, and then switch to Teaching Textbook after that.

My reasons for this are that the very early grades (K-3) are straightforward and easy to teach, and I never saw the point in overwhelming a young child with so many problems and exercises to practice on the basics (except for drill work with multiplication tables). Also, as the math difficulty increased with things like long division, fractions and decimals, my children didn't find their explanations and examples to be adequate.

When my now 15-year-old son was 13, I got him the Teaching Textbook Pre-Algebra program. There is a corresponding white board lecture on CD-ROM for each lesson in the textbook. My son was able to understand most things without extra help or explanation from me. Face it, most homeschool parents are not math majors and don't remember much about Algebra (that was only 20 years ago!). It matters on how well the explanations are done for us as well. I couldn't count the number of times I have looked at math lessons and had to understand the explanations in order to help my child.

Fortunately, with Teaching Textbook, there was very little of this, at least much less than I have had with any other math program. I also felt that it left my son very well prepared for the Algebra course he is taking this year in tenth grade and he is having no problems keeping up.

It is true the Teaching Textbook program is expensive. However,you could very well get a bargain on a used program on E-bay. Also, I have always saved my pennies to buy expensive programs when it really counts, because you will really appreciate the extra help with those tougher high school math courses.

In short, forget buying the .00 math Saxon program for your first grader with all of the bells and whistles, when you really don't need it. Instead, save yourself valuable time, frustration and money by buying a top-quality program, like Teaching Textbook, down the road, when you will really need and appreciate it.

1. You want someone to hold your hand through homeschooling. Many people think they are not qualified to homeschool and want someone to guide them through exactly what to do.

2. You want to be sure to "get it all done". People think the public school systems are able to use textbooks and teach the children what they need to learn. Therefore, they think that homeschoolers need to have textbooks to complete a year of school.

3. Textbooks are better able to keep you on track. If you follow a textbook, you know exactly how far into the year you are and whether you are behind or not.

The fact is that people who use homeschool textbooks tend to have a higher burnout rate. If you use a textbook and find that it is too difficult or too easy or doesn't fit your child's learning style, you either need to adapt the curriculum or plod through the year.

One way to avoid burnout is to vary the learning/teaching style that you are using. Children who like workbooks will probably enjoy sitting and filling them out for an hour or more a day, but children who are more hands-on learners may struggle. If this is the case in your home, find ways to reinforce the material in the textbook without having to read text and answer questions. Take field trips, act out the war or time of history that you are studying, do experiments, draw pictures or do art projects related to the text.

Sometimes parents enjoy using checklists instead of homeschool textbooks. They still keep them on track, but provide a more varied approach to homeschooling.
